Meet the Artist
Casey L Carter
I am a mixed media artist, illustrator, plein air painter, and painting instructor. My style is impressionistic, bright and lively - capturing a broad range of content from landscape and wildlife to still-life and abstract. I am inspired by nature and those around me and have been influenced by artists such as John Dempsey, Jim McVicker, and the 19th-century impressionists. I feel fortunate to have grown up close to nature in a small rural village, where my talents were allowed to grow and bloom.
I currently live in Burton, MI. I exhibit my work in galleries, art fairs, and craft shows all over the state of Michigan. I am also currently a senior artist with Uncommon Murals, through which I have worked on many projects and displays at the Flint Children's Museum.
Please refer to my Artist Statement and CV/Resume for more information on the thought process behind my work and to see information on my past experiences!
About my Process and the Artwork
I am a Michigan Artist and adventurer...
My goal for painting is to not only capture images but to also capture an experience. In doing so, I hope to bring my audience closer to nature and the beauty found there.
In my own personal work, I enjoy painting impressionistic, mixed media landscapes, especially those found in my beautiful state. I do so both in my home studio and outside where I create work "en plein air".
Being a plein air painter means that I have to pack up all of my supplies and hike out to my desired location to create my work. My wanderlust has taken me on many precarious trails, over rivers and streams, and through many a cold night backcountry camping in order to capture a scene. I have found that I really love working outside in the wilderness where I can capture scenes in places few people care to wander. As someone who loves a challenge, It is exhilarating facing environmental factors as well as artistic ones. There are times when dirt, sand or leaves fall or are blown onto a piece as I am working on it, leaving their mark. I feel that this adds to the authenticity of the work.
When I am not working on traditional artwork, I enjoy creating abstract designs using alcohol inks. One of my favorite qualities of the inks is that I have very little control over what it does. I love being able to let go, and let the ink do its thing. This makes the process of working with these inks very relaxing and it acts as an excellent stress reliever for me. I use these abstract designs to create one of a kind home decor items such as coasters and trivets which I sell at art fairs and craft shows. My abstract designs are also available printed on a variety of different items through Redbubble and Society6.
I also enjoy touching people's lives by making commissions. From creating a custom portrait of a pet or loved one, or just creating a unique piece for a client, I know that I am making a difference in someone's life.
I love being able to hand deliver a piece of artwork to a client and seeing their face light up when they see their commission in person for the first time. I have brought more than one customer to tears! It's just a really good feeling knowing that they really appreciate the artwork. I feel like I make people's dreams come true, and I love doing that for them.
